Today, March 8th, is International Women’s Day. And what does International Women’s Day celebrate? Well, it is a chance to praise the achievements of women in different areas, such as global politics, society, and economy. Also, it is a day in which we can discuss globally and with a bigger effect on media, about employment issues that affect women, such as gender equality, compensation, recruiting or other organizational practices.
This year’s theme for International Women’s Day is #PressforProgress, and it is a call to action to every one of us to help build a more gender inclusive working world, since each of us can make a difference and have an influence in our own sphere.
However, although we like celebrating special occasions, we always insist on keeping these habits all year round. If us, as a society, are willing to achieve workplace gender equality, we should work towards it throughout the whole year. Just in case someone wonders what it is that women demand in terms of employment, it is nothing different from what men demand. Therefore, to hire and retain great employees, both male and female, the steps you should follow should be basically the same.
First, what women demand is making as much money as any men when performing similar jobs. All companies should make sure they have equal pay policies, not only to avoid lawsuits, but also to make sure all employees feel equally valued and evenly paid.
Second, just as any other employee, including millennials of both sexes, women demand work flexibility. Flexible work schedules or telecommuting, help employees improve their work-life balance.
Finally, women, just like all employees, are willing to have opportunities to grow professionally. One of the main reasons why employees leave is because they only find growth opportunities outside their own companies. So, if you want to retain those top talented employees, make sure to include a professional development program in your company, and allow them learn, grow and have a career inside your company.
